Quick Tip: Size & Stream Sensors
Learn how the size and stream sensors work on your QuickCakes pancake machine, how to adjust pancake size, and how to clean the sensor lenses for consistent results.
The size and stream sensors are essentially the eyes of your QuickCakes machine. Located directly underneath the orange pull tab for the small fan filter, these two black-and-yellow camera lenses read the batter in real time, calculating the exact milliseconds to dispense and detecting the edge of each pancake. When they’re clean and properly positioned, you get consistent size and shape every time. This video walks you through what each sensor does, how to adjust pancake size, and how to keep both lenses clean.
What Each Sensor Does
- Size Sensor — mounted on a metal slide bar that you can move in and out. This sensor detects the edge of the pancake to determine when to stop dispensing batter. Moving this slide changes the pancake diameter.
- Stream Sensor — located in the back corner of the machine. This sensor is static and does not move. It monitors the batter stream during dispensing.
Adjusting Pancake Size
- Locate the metal slide bar attached to the size sensor (the black-and-yellow lens on the movable rail)
- Smaller pancakes: Pull the slide bar out toward your body
- Larger pancakes: Push the slide bar in toward the machine — this forces the sensor to travel further before it catches the edge of the pancake, resulting in a larger diameter
Cleaning the Sensors
If you notice misshapen pancakes, inconsistent sizing, or other irregularities, the sensor lenses may be obstructed by dried batter.
- Turn the machine off and let it cool completely
- Reach in with a Q-tip and water, a denture brush, or a soft-bristle toothbrush
- Gently clean both the size sensor and stream sensor lenses
- If the lenses have residue on them, they can’t read the batter accurately, so regular cleaning is important
